Preventing Auto Theft
55
Most of us don’t spend a whole lot of our time thinking about auto theft. Most people (especially those not in an urban or high crime area) assume it’s not a problem that they will face. Others assume even if their car is stolen, their insurance company will take care of it. But how sure are you about either of these facts? A smart consumer makes sure they have the knowledge needed, and this article will help you find that information out.
Most people are correct in their assumption that their insurance will cover their vehicle should it be stolen. Most insurance companies see this as something beyond the insured’s control and will cover the loss under comprehensive coverage. So while having your car stolen will undoubtedly be stressful and scary, most can take some solace in the fact that not all is lost.
Yet just because the insurance company will cover it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take steps to keep your vehicle from being stolen. The most obvious (yet often overlooked) way to prevent auto theft is to lock your doors. Many of us leave our vehicles unlocked while making quick runs into stores, restaurants, and gas stations. Thieves are aware of this, and will use this small window of opportunity to take your vehicle.
Another seemingly simple way to avoid auto theft is to make sure you never leave your keys in the ignition. By providing thieves with the keys to your car, you’ve saved them precious time they would have spent hotwiring the vehicle. Why make your vehicle even more attractive to criminals? Make sure you ALWAYS bring your keys with you when you leave your vehicle.
The auto insurance companies obviously don’t want to have to pay out for your stolen vehicle either. There are measures you can take to both reduce the likelihood of theft and lower your insurance premiums at the same time. Things such as GPS navigators, fuel switches, and car alarms all make your car less attractive to thieves and more attractive to the insurance companies.
Nobody plans on having their car stolen, and the experience is never a pleasant one. However by taking a few small steps, you can reduce the risk of your vehicle being stolen, and making sure your insurance company will take care of it in the event that it does.
